Review: Club Med Kani (Maldives) All-In family surftrip
2 September 2025
TL;DR
Club Med Kani in the Maldives isn't a hardcore surf resort, but for surfing families, it offers a unique combination of comfort, snorkeling, island vibes, and plenty of surf options . You can surf Ninjas right on your doorstep, occasionally taking a boat to Sultans, while the rest of the family enjoys snorkeling trips, kids' clubs, and luxurious all-inclusive dining. The price tag is steep, but the experience is unforgettable.
Why we chose Club Med Kani
We're a surfing family. My wife and I both surf, and our 9- and 10-year-old children can already ride waves. For us, a vacation always revolves around the sea, but this time we wanted something more: a carefree, all-inclusive family surf trip , with luxury and without the daily logistics. The Maldives had been at the top of our bucket list for years. I'd been there on a boat trip with surfing friends a long time ago, but it was the first time for my wife and children.
Location & Transfer
Club Med Kani's location is ideal for families. Situated in North Malé Atoll, the resort is just a 25- to 30-minute speedboat ride from Malé Airport. No need to take a seaplane, which makes the journey much easier. As soon as you step off the boat, you'll feel the island vibes : white sand, swaying palm trees, and a warm welcome from the Club Med team.
Rooms & Price Range Club Med Kani
We stayed in a Beach Bungalow . It's simply furnished and unspectacular, but functional and equipped with excellent air conditioning – a must-have in the tropics. After all, you're mostly outdoors here, so it was perfect for us.
Those seeking more comfort can opt for a Deluxe Beach Villa with extra space, an outdoor shower, and a better view. At the very top of the scale are the Overwater Suites in the Exclusive Collection section. These are the iconic lodges on stilts, with a private deck and steps leading directly into the lagoon.
Don't be alarmed by the prices: our trip cost around €10,000 for 10 days all-inclusive for four people (excluding flights) . That's about €1,000 per night in one of the most affordable room types. Overwater suites can cost up to €3,000 per night during peak periods. That was well above our budget, but surprisingly, they were still well-filled.
Food & Drink – beyond expectations
The food was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our trip. We expected a decent all-inclusive buffet, but the quality and variety surpassed everything. Every meal offered a huge selection: fresh sushi, Indian tandoori, Italian pasta, local curries, grilled fish, salads, and desserts. Everything tasted fresh and was prepared with care.
Important for us: our son has a milk allergy. The kitchen staff handled this professionally. There were always dairy-free options, and if that wasn't possible, the chefs simply made something special. That kindness gave us a lot of peace of mind.
An absolute highlight was the weekly White Dinner on the beach . Hundreds of guests, all dressed in white, long tables in the sand, candlelight, and a menu that felt truly gourmet. It was massive, but perfectly organized and culinarily impressive. For us, this was the ultimate proof that Club Med Kani goes far beyond the standard all-inclusive experience.
Surfing @ Club Med Kani
Surfing was, of course, a big part of our experience. The resort is located near Ninja's , a mellow right-hander accessible on foot or with a short paddle. I often found myself in the water alone or with no more than three other surfers. Ninja's is ideal for funboards and longboards.
But there's a downside. The reef is razor-sharp and dangerously shallow at low tide. On day one, I had sea urchins through my booties in my foot , painful and annoying for the rest of the trip. That was reason enough for my wife and kids not to try it. As a result, I mostly surfed Ninjas alone, even though it actually seemed perfect for families.
For quality surf, I took the boat to Sultans once. There I found the real power and lines you expect from the Maldives. It did cost $70 to $100 per run , which is too much to do daily. Conclusion: Club Med Kani isn't a surf camp, but it works well for a family. You catch your waves while your family enjoys other activities.
The Ninja's surf spot: the mellow right on your doorstep
We were there at the end of October . That's outside the Maldives' main surf season (April to September), but normally a bit of swell always makes its way through. This time we were unlucky : for ten days, not a single serious wave. And that was disappointing, because some spots in the region still get a bit of swell – but Ninja's isn't one of them. This spot doesn't get much swell . The result: small, mellow waves. Not ideal, but still surfable.
The setting
Ninja's is a straight point break on a mini-island just in front of Club Med Kani. To reach it, you have to cross a channel of about 20 meters . The channel is deep enough for comfortable paddling, but if your family wants to watch, they'll either have to paddle or swim. Once on the islet, there's a short 200-meter path through a small forest full of hermit crabs . With every step, you see shells disappearing – magical for children.
Wear booties or flip-flops , as you'll be walking on dry coral and sharp rocks. On the other side of the island is a small viewing tower . From here, you have a view of the lineup, less than 100 meters from the peak. For non-surfers, this is the perfect spot to watch and take photos.
The reef and the entry
From the tower, you can paddle out through an opening in the reef. Boarding is relatively easy, but you should be aware of the conditions:
The reef is sharp and shallow , littered with sea urchins .
You can technically paddle all the way around the island to get out, but that's a longer route.
There are two ways to return:
You paddle back to where you entered.
You surf the wave all the way out and return via the lagoon . At high tide, this is the easiest option: you simply glide through into calm water. At low tide, it's more dangerous: over 100 meters, there's only 30–40 cm of water. Then your hands touch the reef while paddling, and your fins sometimes get caught. No problem for experienced surfers, but it's downright dangerous for children.
The wave itself
Ninja's is a mellow right-hander . It can pack a bit more punch in a good swell, but during our week, it was mostly soft and flat. Perfect for longboards and fishes, less suitable if you're looking for shortboard power. I brought my Rob Machado Seaside + Beyond (long fish) , and it proved essential for getting through the flat sections.
The wave breaks fairly predictably and often runs smoothly. Not a barrel machine, but a perfect spot for cruising and pulling lines . Best of all: there was hardly anyone there. Often I was there alone, or with at most three other surfers. Even with the cramped conditions, it felt special: two hours of solo wave-picking on a Maldives break.
Conclusion about the Ninja's Surfspot
Ninja's isn't a world-class wave and certainly not a place to learn to surf safely with young children. But if you appreciate mellow right-handers, have a fish or longboard with you, and enjoy spending sessions almost entirely alone , it's a great bonus that this spot is literally on your doorstep. For families, it's especially convenient: you can surf while your family keeps an eye on you from the view tower or the beach.
Water & Wildlife – Free vs. Paid
The island is situated in a beautiful lagoon with clear water, rays, and small reef sharks. Snorkeling along the beach is free and offers wonderful encounters. However, for the colorful coral and larger creatures, you have to take a snorkeling boat , and those excursions are both paid and expensive. This makes sense: Club Med is the only resort on this island, so there's no competition.
Besides snorkeling, there are numerous other watersports available. SUP, kayaking, and small sailboats are included. The pool with cocktail bar and ping-pong tables were just as popular with us. We also took a jet ski excursion with a private guide . The kids loved it, but the price quickly adds up: several hundred dollars for a short session.
Fitness, kids & extras
A pleasant surprise was the fitness center on the beach . Fully equipped, with a sea view and good air conditioning. Working out in such a setting was special.
There's a comprehensive Kids & Teens Club , but we rarely used it because we did a lot of activities together. Still, it's a valuable asset for parents who want some time for themselves now and then.
In the evenings, a spontaneous community formed around football on the beach , with guests and Club Med staff playing together. My 9-year-old son and I joined in for five evenings – one of the fondest memories.
Service & vibe
The Club Med experience revolves around the GOs (Gentils Organisateurs) . This young, international team creates a warm atmosphere without being intrusive. They know your name, think along with you, and resolve issues quickly.
The atmosphere is lively yet flexible. During the day, you can relax in your hammock or participate in activities. In the evenings, there are shows, theme parties, and the legendary White Party on the beach . The crowd is international, with many Europeans, but also a noticeable number of Russians and Asians. For us, that mix added to the charm.
How much does Club Med Kani cost?
Our trip cost around €10,000 for 10 days all-inclusive for four people (excluding flights) in a Beach Bungalow. Once there, we spent another $2,000 on excursions and extras like snorkeling trips, jet skiing, and the boat trip to the Sultans. You simply don't want to say "no" to the experiences you came for once you're there.
Overwater Suites can go up to €3,000 per night during peak periods. They were well above our budget, but surprisingly, they were well-filled. This speaks volumes about the demographic that Club Med attracts.
For whom (not) suitable
Club Med Kani is ideal for surfing families who prioritize comfort, luxury, and water activities over pure surf scores. While you'll have surfing opportunities, the emphasis is on family, snorkeling, and island life .
It's not ideal for hardcore surfers looking to hit high-performance reef breaks daily, or for travelers on a budget.
